To the Editor: New Hope has been providing services to people with special needs for 33 years and has never experienced a winter like this one. The three-day winter storm and power outage was a first for us and came following three other winter storms. This was the first time in our history that our campus was without electricity for over 24 hours. Twenty-three of our twenty-four community homes were affected by the power outage. People living in eight of our homes were relocated to other homes. I am pleased to say that New Hope clients weathered this storm and electrical outage quite well, but it could not have happened without support from many community resources and the hard work of dedication of many employees. With that, I would like to take this opportunity to say thank you to those people served by New Hope.... ...Joe Gezel and Brad Ross from Indianola deserve a special thank you. They saw our plight on TV and came to our rescue with an innovative portable generator that is powered by the engine of a lawn tractor. They represent a company called Millennium Power. Their generator was used for two days to keep four of our community homes warm. Thanks also to our local Methodist Church, which helped them make contact with us... Frank Hermsen |
